Tanwang Lu has been an important road throughout Chinese history, extending through the western foothills from Tanzhe Temple all the way to Wangping Village, an important transportation hub.
This is one of the most popular climbs for the city’s cyclists as it is within easy reach of the city, especially if you pass by the Jietai Temple road nearby.
A good test for all levels of cyclists, both the north and south sides are challenging and can provide a test for the intermediate and advanced rider. Both sides are roughly 11km in length with an average grade of around 4.5%. This is an honest and steady climb. Patience is key to pace yourself to the top.
The south side climb of Tanwang Lu is the most popular with riders, as they often approach it from Jietai Si. The north side route of Tanwang Lu is quieter however with equally good views. The north side is also almost identical in length, elevation and gradient. Whichever side you summit, you’ll enjoy an excellent descent on the other side.
